Terpene Calculator
Select your terpenes, set the ratios, and instantly predict your cannabis effect profile. Find out whether your blend leans relaxing, energizing, creative — or all three.
How to Use the Terpene Calculator
- Select your terpenes — click any terpene to add it to your blend. You can combine as many as you like from Myrcene, Limonene, Linalool, α-Pinene, Caryophyllene, Ocimene, Terpinolene, and Humulene.
- Set percentages — use the sliders or number inputs to define the proportion of each terpene. Your total must stay at or below 100%.
- Predict your profile — hit the calculate button to see your dominant effect profile, associated effect tags, aroma description, and matching strain examples.
Terpene Effects: Quick Reference
Each cannabis terpene brings a distinct set of effects and aromas. Here is how the eight most common terpenes contribute to your profile:
- Myrcene — The most abundant terpene in cannabis. Earthy, musky aroma. Promotes relaxation and sleep. Dominant in Indica-leaning strains like OG Kush and Granddaddy Purple.
- Limonene — Bright citrus scent. Energizing and mood-lifting. Found in Sativa-leaning strains like Sour Diesel and Super Lemon Haze.
- Linalool — The lavender terpene. Floral and sweet. Strongly sedating and anti-anxiety. Common in strains like Lavender and Do-Si-Dos.
- α-Pinene — Pine forest aroma. Promotes alertness, focus, and memory retention. May counteract some THC-induced memory impairment.
- Caryophyllene — Spicy, peppery bite. The only terpene that also acts as a cannabinoid (binds CB2 receptors). Known for pain relief and anti-inflammatory effects.
- Ocimene — Sweet, herbaceous, woody. Uplifting and antifatigue. Found in strains like Strawberry Cough and Clementine.
- Terpinolene — Complex floral and piney aroma. Highly creative and uplifting. Common in "diesel" strains like Jack Herer and Ghost Train Haze.
- Humulene — Earthy, hoppy (same terpene found in hops). Appetite-suppressant and anti-inflammatory properties.
The Entourage Effect
Terpenes do not work in isolation. Researchers have proposed the entourage effect — the idea that terpenes, cannabinoids (THC, CBD, CBG), and other plant compounds interact synergistically to produce effects greater than any single compound alone.
This is why two strains with identical THC percentages can feel completely different: the terpene profile is what shapes the character of the experience. A high-myrcene, high-THC flower will feel very different from a high-limonene, high-THC flower — even at the same potency.
How to Read Your Terpene Profile
The calculator outputs four key pieces of information:
- Dominant Effect Profile — the primary and secondary predicted effects, scored by how strongly each terpene contributes.
- Effect Tags — specific benefits associated with the terpenes in your blend (e.g., Focus, Sleep, Anti-anxiety, Pain relief).
- Aroma Profile — a description of the expected scent based on each terpene's characteristic aroma.
- Matching Strains — real cannabis strains known for similar terpene profiles and effects.
Building Terpene Blends for Specific Goals
Here are some common effect goals and which terpene combinations tend to achieve them:
- Sleep blend — Myrcene 40%, Linalool 30%, Caryophyllene 20%, Humulene 10%
- Focus blend — Limonene 35%, α-Pinene 35%, Terpinolene 20%, Ocimene 10%
- Relaxation blend — Myrcene 30%, Caryophyllene 30%, Linalool 25%, Limonene 15%
- Creative energy blend — Terpinolene 35%, Limonene 30%, Ocimene 20%, α-Pinene 15%
